This is the first in a series of articles my mom is writing. This one is all about using the 60-20-20 rule to build a great wardrobe.

An ideal wardrobe can be divided into 3 sections - A) the Classics, B) Trendy/In Fashion, and C) Comfortable clothes.

The Classics - These are the clothes that you will be spending the highest amount of your budget and will form the foundation of your wardrobe. These would essentially entail some very decent clothes including a few designer clothes (more if your budget allows for it). It’s better to go with simple, classic timeless designs, and not trendy ones. Also stick with neutral colours like black and white which never go out of fashion, and colours that you look exceptionally good in. A typical set of Classics would comprise a pantsuit, 2 evening blouses, and matching accessories like a black and white pair of evening shoes/sandals with matching clutch bags and maybe a dress thrown in. You can wear this on and off over 2-3 yrs. You can even leave them in your cupboard to be worn after a gap, they will always come handy and one can add a blazer a scarf or so going ahead. But remember to buy the very best - you can wait for a genuine sale if you have to. The main thing to remember is that 60% of your wardrobe budget should go on the Classics.

This Season’s Trend - These are garments you should not spend too much money on because you will not like to be seen in these clothes in the next season. The cardinal rule is to buy what suits you within the trend - this applies to clothes and to accessories.

Your Comfort Clothes - These should be based on comfort rather than look, something you would like to relax in and/or thing you can wear at work when appearance/impression isn’t critical. These don’t have to be branded - they can be simple but decent quality.

Thus your wardrobe expenditure would look like 60% on the Classics, 20% on this season’s trends, and the final 20% on comfort clothes.

Marks and Spencer are one of the most popular Department Stores in the UK and have a wide variety of offerings including home furnishings and furniture, food and wine, electronics, and clothes for men, women, and children.
They also have a page at which you can see what the latest M&S offers are. And they have £10 off £60 if you enter WEBS9MYO at the checkout (until the end of June 2008).
As far as the website, they have really good pictures and its easy to find what you’re looking for with drop down navigation and simple clutter free layouts.

Things I’ve noticed with M&S -
When they have offers its usually as part of a sale.
They have the £10 off £60 on and off, with this offer also being available for part of May.
They sometimes have Free Delivery offers.
They tend towards 3 for 2 offers a lot - they’ve had this on toys and furniture (ongoing as of June 21st 2008).

Would I recommend buying from Marks and Spencer?
Yes - the level of quality of department stores in general is very high and Marks and Spencer is a quality store.
